Rapper and Legendary judge Megan Thee Stallion released a special, limited-edition apparel collection with the anime streaming platform, Crunchyroll. Known as the original hot girl, Megan rose to prominence in the music industry after releasing her debut mixtape, "Fever", in 2019. The mixtape's fourth track, "Cash Sh*t", spurred the viral social media trend, #Hotgirlsummer.
Megan has since collaborated with A-list names such as Nicki Minaj and most recently, Beyoncé, for the remix of the single "Savage". Proceeds from "Savage" were donated to COVID-19 relief efforts in Texas (the home state of both Megan and Beyoncé). Expanding her infectious, bubbly personality from Instagram Live to TV, Megan made her reality debut as a judge on HBO Max's ballroom competition series, Legendary. Last week, it was announced that she had signed on for Legendary second two. Megan has been a longtime fan of anime, often discussing her favorite series' and mangas with her social media followers. Last year, Paper magazine released a profile of the rapper, accompanied by an anime-inspired cover shoot in which she cosplayed as Todoroki, a My Hero Academia character that wields the power of fire and ice.
Crunchyroll announced the collaboration on July 7, 2020, and released the merchandise for pre-order at their online store on Thursday, July 16, 2020. Calling the apparel the "most savage summer yet," the capsule collection features six items: two T-shirts, two hoodies, a long-sleeve, and a tote. The graphics on the merchandise mix together anime and hip-hop styles, resulting in an Afro Samurai-reminiscent aesthetic. Orders aren't expected to arrive until late September, but all good things come to those who wait.
This is the second time the Houston hottie has teamed up with the streamer. In April, she live-streamed an interview with Tim Lyu of Crunchyroll, to discuss her passion and love for anime. On Twitter, some fans questioned whether her interest in the genre was genuine or manufactured for clout, and the talk was her chance to set the record straight. In the interview, Megan said she was "half anime character, half writer." Her affinity for anime is also represented in her style, as she sported a Todoroki-inspired, half-white, half-red wig for a few weeks last year.
Megan Thee Stallion's love for both hip-hop and anime is shared among a slew of rappers, no matter how unlikely the pairing of interests may seem. Rapper Denzel Curry voice-acted the character Ezekiel in the Netlfix anime, Carole & Tuesday. Naruto and Dragon Ball Z (one of the most popular anime franchises to date) is name-dropped in songs by Lil Uzi Vert, Chance the Rapper, and other influential hip-hop artists. Female rappers, including Rico Nasty and Nicki Minaj, have gotten in on the anime-fandom too, using anime aesthetics and design in their album cover art and music videos. The original hot girl and Legendary star isn't the original anime fan, but her merchandise is still the most savage on the market.
