Joss Whedon made a Comic-Con@Home appearance despite his panel being removed from the schedule amid allegations from Justice League actor Ray Fisher. Whedon, a prolific Hollywood director and writer, worked with Fisher following Zack Snyder's early departure from the film. Though Snyder retains the directing credit, Whedon made significant changes to the film, which many feel contributed to a disappointing box office and poor critical reception. Luckily, Snyder will see his vision realized next year, when the Snyder Cut of Justice League debuts on HBO Max.
Fisher, a longtime supporter of Snyder, made shocking claims about Whedon earlier this month, calling his behavior on the Justice League set "gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable." Though he's also mentioned a non-disclosure agreement is preventing him from speaking out too much more, Fisher doubled down on his accusations during his panel at this weekend's Justice Con. Fisher reiterated his comments about Whedon were true, and even said, "The man is probably scared, and he should be because we are going to get to the heart of everything - everything - that went down." Additionally, in recent weeks, others, like Kevin Smith and members of Buffy's stunt team, have made claims about Whedon's onset behavior.
Whedon was expected to take part in a panel at Comic-Con@Home titled "A Zoom with Joss Whedon." However, on Friday, the same day the panel was set to go live, it was quietly pulled from the schedule with no explanation. Interestingly, though, Whedon did wind up making an appearance on another panel, "A Conversation with Nathan Fillion." Whedon appeared throughout, but made no mention of Fisher's allegations. In the Comic-Con video below, Whedon shows up at the 15:18, 27:52, 38:57, and 42:39 marks.
Whedon's appearance comes as a bit of a surprise, considering how quietly his was taken off Comic-Con's schedule. However, it could also be a sign of the director testing the waters with fans. It's a relatively low-profile appearance that many may not have noticed initially. He also had a friendly panel host in Fillion, who's worked with Whedon on several projects in the past. Other actors like Gina Torres and Alan Tudyk appeared at different parts of the conversation as well. All three starred in Whedon's short-lived Firefly series.
It will be interesting to see how fans and critics alike react to Whedon's appearance at SDCC. Though under the radar, it's still a bold move for him to show up in the same weekend Fisher doubled down on his accusations. The public's response to the panel could give him a sense of the general mood toward him right now, which could either encourage or discourage Whedon from finally responding to Fisher's comments. However, only time will tell if anything comes from Joss Whedon's appearance, or if he plans on continuing his silence on the matter.
