Netflix's Indian Matchmaking vaulted into the spotlight in the past few days. The show's matchmaker, Sima Taparia, has become a household name, especially in Asian families. Thankfully, she is enjoying all the attention she's getting, as it was always her dream to be popular.
The high profile matchmaker works for clients in the US and India, which led her to become a Netflix star. In the new series, she helps seven eligible singles find their perfect partner. Now, her social media account is flooded with comments from singletons who want her to find an ideal match for them, as well.
Since Sima was a young girl, she wanted to be a famous and well-known name. While talking to CN Traveler, Sima revealed, "I always had great ambition and wanted to make something of myself so people far and wide would know my name." However, she married at the young age of 19, and her dreams were put on hold for a while. The Mumbai based matchmaker said, "My in-laws were from an orthodox family of Marwaris and so I never really had the chance to work on my dreams." Interestingly, this isn't her first gig with Netflix. Earlier, she partnered with the same creator, Smriti Mundhra, to film her daughter's experience with an arranged marriage. The journey was transformed into a documentary called A Suitable Girl that is also available on Netflix. After producing this documentary, the duo decided to team up again for Indian Matchmaking and document the entire process behind an arranged marriage. Smriti reached out to hundreds of Sima's clients, and twelve families agreed to be filmed. Out of twelve, only seven made it to the final cut.
Why did Sima choose to be a matchmaker and not something else? Well, she has an innate talent for matchmaking. She explained, "I am an extrovert and so I am very social and I love meeting new people, talking to them and finding out little details that I lock away in my brain." She mentions that she has even matched people while on vacation waiting at the luggage carousel at the Mumbai airport. It's not just her job, it's her passion to help two families come together.
Despite the criticism the series is facing right now, the 57-year-old must be proud of herself. Sima has not only made a name for herself, but her business will also see an exponential rise in the coming months. Right now, she is being approached by singletons looking to get hitched with her help. She said, "Now young people who have seen the series have been getting in touch with me from all around the world and people in India are asking their parents to get in touch with me to find them partners like Nadia and Aparna." She also recently made her debut into the digital world and activated her first-ever IG account.
All episodes of Indian Matchmaking are now available to stream on Netflix.
