Andrew Scott is reuniting with his Fleabag co-star and creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the second season of His Dark Materials. Scott revealed the news during the series' Comic-Con@Home panel Thursday. The BBC and HBO fantasy series is set to release its second season this fall
In the world created by author Philip Pullman for his fantasy trilogy novels, every person's soul exists out of their bodies and is represented by talking animals called daemons. Each human and their daemon hold a sacred bond. Season 1 adapted most of the events of the first book, The Golden Compass, while season 2 will follow the material from the second book, The Subtle Knife. In the series, Scott plays Colonel John Parry, who had a brief cameo in season 1. However, his character will be much more prominent in season 2, and his daemon will have a familiar voice.
During the Comic-Con panel, Scott announced for the first time that his daemon would be voiced by his Fleabag co-star and close friend Phoebe Waller-Bridge. "What's beautiful to me about the books is the relationship with the daemons and, I think this is the first time we are revealing this, but my daemon is going to be played by someone who is very close to me in real life, which is a young performer and writer called Phoebe Waller-Bridge," said Scott. "The relationship is all about companionship, friendship, and loyalty, and that's what I feel about Phoebe in my real life, so it's wonderful that this is happening." The creator and star of the critically-acclaimed Amazon comedy series will play Scott's daemon, an osprey named Sayan Kotor.
As part of the panel, HBO released a teaser trailer for the second season, showing the first look at Scott's character. Scott also teased that a majority of his scenes will be in a hot air balloon with Lin-Manuel Miranda's character Lee Scoresby. Dafne Keen stars in the series' second season, along with Miranda, Scott, Ruth Wilson, Ariyon Bakare, and Amir Wilson, who all appeared during the Comic-Con panel along with executive producer Jane Tranter and writer and executive producer Jack Thorne. Waller-Bridge is among other new cast members who were announced earlier Thursday. Terence Stamp, Jade Anouka, and Simone Kirby will all join the second season.
It's no doubt that Fleabag fans will be very excited to see Scott and Waller-Bridge reunite as companions. The two actors proved to have undeniable chemistry on screen, and it's nice to know that, according to Scott, they're good friends in real life too. While their characters are not going to have a romantic connection in this series, as they did as Fleabag and Hot Priest, it will be satisfying to see them share the screen again. The exact date for the second season of His Dark Materials has not yet been announced, but fans now at least know that it is set to return sometime in the fall.
