The first teaser for the upcoming Child’s Play TV series, which premieres in 2021, has arrived. As one of the longest-running horror franchises in existence, Child’s Play has been frightening fans for four decades and counting.
Though the franchise hasn’t had a direct sequel since 2017’s Cult of Chucky, 2019 saw the series rebooted with a Child’s Play film that didn’t involve any of the series’ three most well-known contributors: Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif, who voiced the pint-sized Chucky, and creator Don Mancini. Thankfully for fans, however, a Child’s Play TV series was announced in 2018, shared between SyFy and sister channel, the USA Network. So far, not a lot of the program’s plot is known, but what is known is that apparently, Chucky will wreak havoc on a small American town after he’s purchased at a yard sale. What is also known at this point is that all three of the talents mentioned above will be involved in the series, meaning that Chucky will regain his original voice after Mark Hamill took over for the 2019 Child’s Play reboot.
It’s fitting then, given his return to the character he created, that Don Mancini is the first to offer fans a glimpse of what’s to come. Using his newly created Instagram account, @realdonmancini, Mancini teased the first official look at the upcoming Chucky series. The spot doesn’t give much away, but it does set the sinister tongue-in-cheek tone the franchise has become known for over the years. The teaser finishes with the tagline: “An evil too great to play on just one network,” a reference to Chucky being shared between SyFy and USA Network. You can see the full promotional spot below:
One thing that’s immediately clear about the teaser is that any concept of Chucky originating at a yard sale in a small American town seems absent. Set entirely in a closed toy store, this first look at the Chucky series appears to imply that Chucky originates as a new toy rather than second hand, from a neighborhood sale. Unfortunately, even at this point, 2021 seems a long way off, and given that fans are only now seeing their first teaser for the series, despite it having been in the works since 2018, it’s hard to say when more information will arrive. A full-length trailer will have to come at some point, but there are still over five months left in 2020, meaning that it could be months before anything more is known.
One perspective to consider concerning the teaser is that simply because it shows Chucky in a toy store does not mean that this is where the story takes off. The original Syfy synopsis had stated that allies and enemies from Chucky’s past would join the cast of the series, and just how and where these reunions take place is anyone’s guess. For now, at least, fans of the franchise can rest knowing that a full-length trailer is on its way, and when it does arrive, far more will become clear about Chucky.
