Wonder Woman 1984 Delayed Two Months To Fall 2020 | Screen Rant

Wonder Woman 1984's release date is delayed again. The highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe sequel was one of the many projects affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It was originally scheduled to come out this June, but with movie theaters closed around the world to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Warner Bros. had no choice but to move it. Back in March, the studio decided on an August release date - though even then people weren't convinced it would be able to make that.

In the months since the initial Wonder Woman 1984 delay, movie theaters have started to slowly reopen, but the health crisis remains an extremely fluid situation. As states start loosening restrictions and stay-home orders, coronavirus cases are starting to increase in certain areas, raising questions about whether or not it will actually be safe to go to the multiplex this summer. Even if it is, fans will have to wait a little longer to see Diana Prince again, as Wonder Woman 1984 has been pushed back to the fall.

The official Wonder Woman Twitter account shared the news today, announcing the new release date of October 2, 2020. Check out the post in the space below:

This move coincides with WB delaying Tenet to late July, and it makes sense. If Wonder Woman 1984 stood pat in mid-August, there'd be only two weeks separating it from Christopher Nolan's upcoming blockbuster. The studio clearly has high hopes for both of these films, so it's understandable why they'd want to give the pair some breathing room. As movie theaters adjust to a new normal, there will be capped attendance (some theaters are open at only 25% capacity), which will severely limit box office revenue. In order to score a solid haul, Tenet will need to have a very lengthy run facing limited competition. Under normal circumstances, WB wouldn't want two of their premier tentpoles pitted against each other, so they're definitely going to play things safe now.

Right now, Wonder Woman 1984 is scheduled to go up against the Michael B. Jordan vehicle Without Remorse and Tom Hanks' sci-fi film BIOS. It clearly is the highest-profile new release slated for that weekend, and it will be interesting to see if either of those other titles move so they don't have to go head-to-head with the Wonder Woman sequel. Wonder Woman 1984 is also the only comparable tentpole coming out in the month of October, so considering it does premiere in the fall, it won't be facing any direct competition for its target demographic. That means on-paper, the aforementioned concern about needing lengthly legs at the box office shouldn't be a problem - so long as audiences are willing to head out to the theater.
