The Office is a cultural phenomenon in and of itself with millions of fans enjoying the show live when it was airing and now that it has ended through streaming services like Netflix. The show was about a normal group of office workers that PBS decided to make a documentary about. In the finale, PBS brings the subjects together after their documentary's release.
The finale of the show does a stellar job in showing where the characters are after years have passed since the end of the documentary and where the characters may be going after the final episode. The show references some of the earlier seasons and brings to fruition some foreshadowing as well.
10 Dwight Foreshadows Michael's Cameo
Angela asks Dwight if he's excited about their wedding and he says yes, but he's sad that most of the old gang aren't there. For any viewer that's watched the show, knows about Dwight's strong bond with Michael, this could easily be boiled down to he's sad that Michael hasn't been there for a while and he's upset that Michael might not be at his wedding. Dwight's nostalgia for the old office team is heartwarming and everyone was happy to see Michael made the wedding.
9 Wassup Reference To The Pilot
Oscar is understandably indignant when the guys said he should go to the bachelorette party with the women because he's gay and might not want to go to their bachelor party. Instead, he goes along with the guys and says he'll just have to remember how he acted before he came out, which leads to an edit of him in the middle of the limo going "wassup" to everyone.
This is a reference to the pilot episode of the series when Michael says this to Jim and Dwight, which was also a time before Oscar had come out to everyone in the office.
8 Andy Is Finally Calm
When Andy first joins the cast he has a lot of anger issues and after he punches a wall when being pranked by Jim he's sent to anger management classes. Even after the classes, he has anger issues, and he feels lost throughout most of the show.
In the finale, he finally seems content even though his circumstances of becoming a viral laughing stock has everyone worried. It's a fitting story arc for the character and the audience is happy to see him finally at peace.
7 Jim Pranking Dwight
Although it's a normal bachelor party thing to hire a stripper for the guy who's about to be married, by the season finale Jim should know Dwight well enough that he probably wouldn't be into it. Also, the fact that he has his phone up filming the interaction as Dwight thinks she's a waitress, we can only assume he'll send it to Pam after. It's also funny that Dwight never notices this clear prank and instead assumes that Jim took him to Kevin's bar as a prank instead.
6 Stanley Moving To Florida Was Foreshadowed
Stanley has shown throughout the series that Florida is one of his favorite places as he vied for a spot on the Florida team when the office was going to work there. He says that Florida Stanley is happy and would love going to work down there, although most of the time he just drives around in fancy cars and hits on women. It was the only logical option for him to move to Florida when he retired and it's fitting he's done so in the finale.
5 Dwight And Angela's Cats
At their wedding, many guests chose to bring cats presumably as a wedding gift for Angela. Earlier in the show, Angela broke up with Dwight because he killed her sick cat as he was taught to do from his farm life upbringing.
Hopefully, he's changed his mind since they'll now have at least ten, if not more, and none of them were kittens. Let's all agree to assume that he's changed his view on cats when they're sick.
4 Everyone Changing Except Kelly And Ryan
By the finale of the show, almost every character has changed for the better. Angela and Dwight are finally getting married, Michael has kids, Kevin's successfully running a bar, Nellie has a baby, and Andy is finally calm and happy. Everyone seems to be happy and healthy, even Kelly has a strong relationship with a pediatrician who goes to the wedding with her, but then Ryan shows up. Kelly and Ryan run off together, leaving a baby and her boyfriend at the wedding in a hilarious end to their story.
3 What Else Did The Documentary Miss?
Meredith mentions she was getting her Ph.D. for seven years while the documentary was filming. Oscar mentions his origami skills were never shown in the documentary as well.
This makes the audience wonder and theorize, probably forever since the show has ended, what else the documentary missed about the characters they've grown to love over the nine seasons.
2 Who Was Filming At The End?
The office employees get frustrated by the PBS execs and the party they've thrown in the warehouse. They decide to run off and go upstairs to have a party of their own away from any of the PBS people who filmed the documentary. Because they leave the party, who is it that is filming them in the last scenes of the finale?
1 Dwight Foreshadowed The Wedding/Funeral
Dwight has said earlier in the series that the Schrutes treat weddings like funerals and funerals like weddings, making weddings a more somber affair. This comes to fruition in the finale when Dwight and Angela are married and are standing in shallow graves during the ceremony. Thankfully, it wasn't a somber affair in the end, but it's still a good callback to an image Dwight had evoked earlier with this anecdote.
