The CW's The 100 proved from the start that it was willing to kill characters. Two delinquents that died before the Dropship door opened were proof enough that it was a cruel world. As time went on, the deaths did not let up, and even if they were not all main characters as time went on, there still many lives lost.
Enemies and allies are lost often, and it is not uncommon to find a familiar face in danger of losing their life. While every death is heartbreaking, some did more to affect the story than others.
10 Wells
For shock value or not, Wells Jaha's death made it clear that The 100 was willing to kill off significant characters. As the Chancellor's son, Wells was already an enemy to several delinquents as his father had floated many of their parents. Wells was a constant reminder to several members of the hundred of what they hated about the Ark. Wells' death instigated hanging Murphy for his fate, even though Murphy hadn't killed Wells.
9 Charlotte
It was Charlotte that killed Wells. Young and scared, Charlotte saw Chancellor Jaha in her nightmares and had to face Wells when she woke up. Although Murphy was initially blamed for Wells Jaha's death, she confessed to his murder as the delinquents hung Murphy, giving Clarke enough time to cut the rope and save him.
After being hunted by Murphy, and guilty for her actions, Charlotte jumped off a cliff. Charlotte's death led to the alliance between Clarke and Bellamy when they decided to make the rules together instead of running their camp based on chaos.
8 Finn
Finn was not the first person to die at Clarke's hand, but he was the first to make such a massive impact. Finn had sealed his fate after murdering several innocent, unarmed Grounders in their village. Lexa's initial request to agree to an alliance was that Finn dies for his actions. Clarke's choice to mercy kill Finn saved him from going through excessive torture and pain. With Finn's death, an official partnership formed between the Grounders and Skaikru to save their people from Mount Weather.
7 Josephine
Josephine Lightbourne did not make her first appearance until season six. However, her death was the event that sent Russell and Gabriel on a journey to find a way to bring her back to life. Eventually, they succeeded in bringing Josephine's mind back to life through another person's body. The discovery leads to the existence, and ultimately immortality of the Primes. Season six emphasizes the horror of Josephine's immortality as she briefly takes control of Clarke Griffin's body.
6 Conclave
The Conclave caused the deaths of several, but given the circumstances, it still counts. There is one final Conclave to determine which Clan gets to survive Praimfaya in the bunker. In the end, Octavia is victorious, but the deaths of the other warriors were not in vain. Octavia declared that the bunker would be shared by every Clan, each submitting one-hundred members.
The Conclave marked the deaths of Roan and Luna. As many believed that Luna was the last Nightblood, her death, and Ontari's before her, also lead the Grounders to think that the time of the Commanders was over, and they turned to Octavia to lead Wonkru.
5 Lincoln
Lincoln helped his people when they needed him. He paid for his decision with his life. Lincoln did not deserve to die. He was not a threat to Skaikru and had spent plenty of time helping them while on the ground. Yet, with Pike in charge, that didn't matter. Lincoln's death sent Octavia spiraling as she grieved Lincoln, diving deep into her warrior instincts. Octavia became violent in the aftermath of Lincoln's death.
4 Lexa
Lexa's death was one of the most significant losses in the series, but it also revealed essential knowledge about the Flame. Lexa was the Commander, and as such, everyone was forced to follow her judgment on calls such as Skaikru becoming the thirteenth Clan. When she died, the Flame was removed, showing that it was an AI device, withholding the memories of previous Commanders. Lexa's death also left Clarke in grief as Lexa was added to the list of people that she loved who had died.
3 Mount Weather
Even though this is not one person, in particular, it did have an essential impact on the series. Clarke and Bellamy's decision to irradiate level five killed nearly everyone that lived in the mountain. The event gave Clarke the name "Wanheda" for the mass deaths.
But, Mount Weather did not only affect Clarke. Jasper may have been the person most affected by the deaths. Not only did Jasper lose Maya to the radiation, but several innocent lives of those who lived in peace were taken.
2 Jasper
After Mount Weather, Jasper was forever changed. Losing Maya broke something in Jasper that he couldn't get back, and he wasn't interested in trying to either. Instead, Jasper continued to realize the cruel ways of humanity and death. Jasper went on to believe that he would rather die on his terms than continue to survive long enough until the next war. Jasper's choice, and the letter he had written for Monty, impacted Monty's feelings about Earth and what it meant to deserve Eden.
1 Monty and Harper
Even though they're separate people, their deaths are tied together. Jasper's letter and reason to die before Praimfaya gave Monty and Harper a different look on what it meant to live. Tired of fighting, Monty and Harper decided to live before expecting to wake up their friends. While things did not go according to plan, they did devote their lives to finding a new hospitable environment for their friends to live. In Monty's videos, he acknowledged Jasper's beliefs and told his friends to be the good guys. With Monty and Harper gone, and their son Jordan joining the team, Clarke, Bellamy, and their friends decided they would do better in Monty's honor.
