Normal People: How Old Connell & Marianne Are At The Beginning & End

About four years pass in Normal People, which means its main characters go from teenagers to young adults. Starring Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones, the Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney's eponymous 2018 novel follows the complicated relationship of a young Irish couple. Because of Normal People's educational backdrop and Irish terminology, some viewers may be wondering about the exact age of Connell Waldron and Marianne Sheridan.

Normal People consists of 12 episodes, with every three marking a new phase in the main characters' lives. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald, the series locks into specific times and places as Connell (Mescal) and Marianne (Edgar-Jones) transition from naive teenagers into responsible adults. The primary conflict derives Connell's insecurities and crippling depression, along with Marianne's traumatic memories from the past (the result of physical and emotional abuse). Much of this continues throughout the story, which seems to take place over the course of approximately four years.

When Normal People begins, Connell and Marianne live in County Sligo in Ireland. Because both characters are applying for university, they are presumably 17 or 18 years old, and finishing up the sixth and final year of secondary school (high school). The first three episodes explore the push and pull dynamic of their relationship, with Connell worrying about his social circle and Marianne caring little about inconsequential opinions. Episodes 4 through 6 of Normal People chronicle the protagonists first and second years at Trinity College Dublin, while episodes 7 through 9 show them mature as undergraduate students, as both are accepted into a prestigious program. After an Italian getaway near Rome, Marianne moves to Sweden via the Erasmus Programme. At this point, Normal People's main character are approximately 20 or 21 years old.

Normal People ends with both Connell and Marianne still attending Trinity College Dublin, but making plans for the future. The pair return to their native County Sligo, with the Normal People finale revealing that Connell has become more confident with his writing, and that Marianne urges him to submit short stories to different publications. Ultimately, Connell is shocked to learn that he's been accepted into a program in New York City. Both of Normal People's Connell and Marianne then agree to separate for a least one year, and believe that they'll be "okay." When Normal People concludes, Connell and Marianne are about 21 or 22 years old.

As of now, Rooney doesn't plan to write a Normal People sequel, and it appears that the Hulu adaption won't be anything more than a limited series. Still, the author did publish a short story in The White Review that seemingly provides a postscript to the story. Published in 2016, "At the Clinic" reveals that Connell and Marianne are 23 years old when they visit a dentist together, which means that the story takes place a little over one year after the ending of Normal People.
