The Human Torch Envies Spider-Man... For The Parker Luck

It's official: the Fantastic Four's Human Torch envies Spider-Man... for the Parker luck. The dynamic between Spider-Man and the Human Torch has always been an entertaining one, in large part because they were both envisioned as youthful superheroes.

The Human Torch and Spider-Man were originally rivals, but it didn't take long for them to build a real friendship. They meet up pretty regularly on top of the Statue of Liberty; oddly enough the meeting place was Spider-Man's idea, even though it's pretty inconvenient given he has to hitch a ride on any passing helicopter or covertly stick to the side of one of the boats. The Torch became one of the few people trusted with Peter's Parker's secret identity. The story of how he learned it was told in Spider-Man/Human Torch #5, a hilarious issue in which Johnny Storm finally realized who Spider-Man really was.

At the time, Peter was working as a schoolteacher. The Human Torch came to give an assembly speech, and it went wrong when a bunch of thugs held the school up in order to execute a rival's son in front of Johnny Storm in an act of payback. Peter managed to catch Johnny's eye, and revealed he was Spider-Man by miming web-shooters and pointing at himself; working together, the two superheroes saved the day. Naturally, Johnny immediately called a meeting at the Statue of Liberty, where he confronted Spider-Man over this shocking news - and revealed his true sentiments towards Peter Parker. It turned out Johnny had always envied Peter Parker, and he couldn't believe he was a fellow superhero.

In a hilarious twist, Johnny revealed he'd even coined a term for it; the Parker Luck. Of course, to Spider-Man that phrase means something very different; he's always fumed at the 'Parker Luck,' blaming it for his every misfortune. Suddenly Spider-Man was faced with the fact that, to an outsider looking in, he's actually got it all; a loving aunt who adores him, a career that means he's something of a household name, a genius intellect, and even some absolutely stunning love interests. The very same issue had seen Johnny realize Peter had married Mary Jane Watson, model and actress, and his jealousy was burning brighter than ever before - especially given MJ had dropped off Peter's lunch and left the entire school assembly ogling her rather than looking at the Human Torch.

Spider-Man found it funny, but on reflection the Human Torch's envy should really have served as a correction to him. Peter Parker is a glass-half-empty kind of guy, always focused on what's gone wrong in his life, ignorant of the fact a lot has gone right.
