Plenty of people were initially on the fence about Netflix drama Ozark but the third season — which was released on March 27th — made everyone into believers. Season 3 has an impressive 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 76% for season 2 and 70% for season 1.
Apart from the constant twists and turns, the other thing that makes the show great is the character development. All characters have questionable morals and this makes them perfect to classify under the Dungeons And Dragons Moral Alignment System. Here's where the main characters fit in.
10 Darlene – Chaotic Evil
Darlene generally doesn't value anyone else's life but her own. For starters, she killed her husband by poisoning him with cyanide. She also laced a bunch of heroin with fentanyl, causing the death of 22 addicts. She also killed the pregnant wife of a Pastor Mason Young by slicing her belly open and taking out the baby.
All these characteristics make Darlene a chaotic evil person. There's also the fact that she just can't work well with others, as she disagreed with the Navarro Cartel and with Marty too. And given that she couldn't have a child, she forcefully took Pastor Mason Young's baby as her own.
9 Del – Neutral Evil
Del — an enforcer of the Navarro Cartel — kicked the events of the series in motion with a couple of brutal murders. When Marty's business partner, Bruce, stole part of the money that they were laundering, Del gathered everyone up and killed them. Marty could have been killed too had he not talked his way out of it.
Del also threw Wendy's lover Gary Silverberg out of a building because he wanted to run away with her. These actions prove that Del is a neutral evil character, as he doesn't kill for no reason. Everyone who ended up dead by Del's hands had wronged the cartel in some way.
8 Ben – Chaotic Good
Wendy's younger brother, Ben, first appeared in season 3 and immediately established himself as one of the most intriguing characters of the series. Working as a substitute teacher, he got fired after he destroyed students' phones for not paying attention in class.
Ben then went to live with Wendy and Marty but when he found out they were working with a drug lord, he went totally insane. He made a series of reckless decisions, including telling Hellen's daughter that her mother was a criminal. Ben was doing all these things for the right reasons but he did so in a disorganized manner; consequently, this qualifies him as chaotic good. Eventually, Ben got himself killed.
7 Sue – Chaotic Neutral
After Charlotte changed her mind about emancipating herself, she demanded that her parents see a therapist. So, they went to Sue. But then Marty began bribing Sue to favor her during the therapy sessions and she gladly took the money. Sue wasn't necessarily a bad person but she put her own needs first and this qualifies her as chaotic neutral.
When Wendy bribed her too, Sue took the money as well. This put her in a dilemma during the sessions, leading her to confess to the couple that they both bribed her. And when they began arguing and accidentally revealed details about the cartel, Sue asked for another bribe to keep quiet. Then she used the money to buy a McLaren 570s.
6 Helen – Neutral Evil
Helen, the cartel's attorney, didn't hesitate to turn on Wendy and Marty when it suited her. She wanted to take over the casino business and to be favored more by Omar Navarro. She thus tried to make the couple seem incompetent but they outsmarted her and she eventually got killed in the season 3 finale.
Helen's actions make her a neutral evil character. She had no problem with throwing others under the bus to further her own goals. She also ordered hits on Sue and Ben because it was really necessary, not because she was a murderous psychopath
5 Charlotte – Chaotic Neutral
Charlotte has never really understood why her parents need to launder money for a cartel despite the obvious fact that they will get killed if they don't do it. She sees it as wrong and that's it. She doesn't want to look at the whole issue from a different perspective and this has made her constantly clash with her parents.
Tired of her "weird" family, Charlotte even hired a lawyer and sought to emancipate herself. But despite hating the "dangerous" crimes, she still commits petty crimes that she deems harmless such as stealing books and taking money from her parents. This makes Charlotte a chaotic neutral.
4 Jonah – Neutral Good
Jonah is often seen as too smart and mature for his age. He normally makes his own decisions, as evidenced by the fact that he refused to sign a pledge against drugs in school so that he could analyze it first. And when his parents opened up about what they were involved in, Jonah understood because he knew what was at stake.
Jonah does not have any qualms about doing bad things for a good reason. He was ready to shoot a cartel hitman who had sneaked into his home. He was also ready to shoot Helen for ordering Ben's murder. This makes him a neutral good character.
3 Ruth Langmore – True Neutral
Ruth normally goes with her instincts when deciding what to do and which person to associate with. She is impulsive and has constantly switched sides throughout the series. At one point, she wanted to kill Marty then later, she became his most trusted assistant.
Ruth's temper sometimes gets out of hand but she has a soft side too which is seen courtesy of her relationship with Ben. She doesn't have strong opinions about anyone or anything; as such, any of her enemies can turn into her friends at any time and vice versa. This makes Ruth a true neutral.
2 Wendy Byrde – Neutral Evil
Wendy was generally selfish from the start and she hasn't changed much. This makes her a neutral evil character. She isn't out to harm anyone; no, Wendy just wants what's good for Wendy. She cheats on Marty and is willing to run away with her lover because it makes her feel good. She doesn't care how it will affect the kids.
Wendy also gives her brother Ben out to an assassin because she doesn't want her good graces with the cartel to be messed with. To add to that, Wendy decides against Marty's suggestion to cut ties with the cartel and disappear because she has come to love the world of crime and it makes her feel alive.
1 Marty Byrde – Lawful Evil
Marty is focussed on manipulating the system to his advantage and this qualifies him as lawful evil. He suggests to the Navarro Cartel that it would be better for him to launder their money in the Missouri Ozarks instead of Chicago because the feds aren't flooded there like they are in the big city.
Marty does unethical things but he is neither selfish or cold-hearted. He sets up legitimate ways to launder money and often works with bad people to reach a mutual goal. Despite Wendy cheating on him, Marty stays by her side because he knows she's a valuable business partner.
