8 The Spark (Episode 1) - 7.9
"The Spark" was the series premiere and the lowest-ranking episode. To kick off the miniseries, viewers meet the Richardson family and Shaker Heights newbies Mia and Pearl. From afar, the Richardsons appear to have it all — wealth, a gorgeous home, beautiful children, a couple who seemingly adores each other — but we slowly learn not all is what it seems. Mia and Peal appear nice enough but it's obvious they're hiding something since they have constantly moved around.
7 Seeds And All (Episode 2) - 8.0
In "Seeds and All," Elena asks Mia to work for her at her home, and Mia accepts. It's obvious Mia doesn't want to form a friendship with Elena or have anything to do with her, but she is living on Elena's rental property and her daughter Pearl is over there most days after school. However, Mia's constant surveillance of Pearl bothers her, and the two have a tense moment.
At school, Pearl is looking to move from geometry to algebra II but is denied by a racist principal. Elena steps up to the plate to vouch for Peal, unbeknownst to Mia.
6 The Uncanny (Episode 6) - 8.0
"The Uncanny" was a throwback episode, showing viewers what they've been waiting for: a look into Mia's past. The year is 1981 and Mia is a young girl heading off to New York City for art school. It's in this episode we meet her loving parents and sweet brother Warren. Mia is a talented artist who shows a lot of promise and quickly becomes her professor's favorite student.
Outside of school, Mia is approached by a young man who asks her to be a surrogate for him and his wife. Mia takes his card and runs but after her tuition skyrockets, she decides to follow through with surrogacy for the money. But after Warren dies, viewers now see why Mia's so attached to Bebe's story — because Mia took their baby and ran.
5 The Spider Web (Episode 4) - 8.1
In"The Spider Web," viewers learn more about Mark and Linda's backstory and their issues with fertility. After years of struggling to get pregnant, it makes all the sense in the world why they would do anything to keep Mirabelle. At this point in the story, Elena has caught on that Bebe and Mia are friends. If it weren't for Mia, they wouldn't be in the situation they found themselves in.
Elena does some detective work and finds out where Bebe works and lives, and eventually makes her way to Bebe's apartment. It's there that Elena tries to convince Bebe to let Mark and Linda give Mirabelle the life she deserves. When Bebe declines, Elena slips her a check for $10,000 and tells her to think about it before leaving the apartment.
4 Seventy Cents (Episode 3) - 8.2
"Seventy Cents" did a fantastic job of showing the differences and perceptions of race. After Mia gets a job at the Chinese restaurant, she learns more about what's behind Bebe's tears. After battling postpartum depression, she left her daughter at a fire station in the middle of the night. Mark and Linda took her in shortly after but Bebe never knew what became of her daughter's future, driving her to tears.
In this episode, everyone is getting ready for Mirabelle's first birthday (which is when audiences learn that Mark and Linda's daughter is actually the same daughter Bebe gave up) and Mia gives Bebe the address to the party so she can take matters into her own hands.
3 Find A Way (Episode 8) - 8.3
"Find a Way" was the finale and it ended in flames. The series has been leading up to the demise of Elena and Mia and we finally saw it happen. What's more is that we also saw the fall of the Richardson children. With Trip dating Pearl in secret, Moody crushing on Pearl, Izzy battling bullying, depression and her fondness of Mia, and Lexie getting over an abortion and a breakup, the Richardson children are in shambles. They finally have had enough of their overbearing mother when Elena evicts Mia and Pearl, resulting in flames.
2 Duo (Episode 5) - 8.4
"Duo" proved Lexie didn't learn a thing about race or privilege. She becomes pregnant and decides to get an abortion without telling anyone but Pearl. But when Pearl shows up to the clinic, she realizes Lexie used a fake name: Pearl Warren. Her name. Pearl now finally realizes that Lexie has been using Pearl's own identity and struggles with her own, causing a rift between the two.
Meanwhile, Elena becomes obsessed with Mia's background and heads to New York in the middle of the night to get to the bottom of it. While there, it becomes clear that Elena is unhappy in her marriage as she calls up her ex-boyfriend to reminisce on old times.
1 Picture Perfect (Episode 7) - 8.8
The Richardson family finally sees Elena snap when she yells at Izzy to put on her plaid Keds for the family Christmas picture. Elena wants her family to look "picture perfect" even though their family is anything but. In fact, they're all falling apart. Things get heated between Elena and Bill in particular because Elena essentially threatened Mia in the bathroom after court. Now that Elena knows all of Mia's dirty little secrets, Mia is stuck between saving her reputation from her child and helping Bebe get her daughter back.
