In 2008, ABC Family (now Freeform) capitalized on the pregnant teenager craze with a new kind of drama, The Secret Life of the American Teenager. The series followed a teenager named Amy Juergens through pregnancy, childbirth, and conflict with family and frenemies. Those frenemies included bad boys, jocks, cheerleaders, and other pregnant young women. Some of the parents on the series have even worse issues than their kids.
Though the show is sometimes criticized for its sensationalism and representation of teenage motherhood, some episodes did fairly well on IMDb. Here are the ten best.
10 And Unto Us, A Child Is Born - 7.5
This is the season one finale where Amy gives birth to John. The episode is one of the most interesting because we get to see Amy's community rally around her. The previous episode, "One Night at Band Camp" has explained Ricky and Amy's history.
Now, Ricky is actually with her, holding his son. To offset the joy of the occasion, Ashley and her dad decide to live separately from Amy and her mother.
9 Unforgiven - 7.5
A good portion of the first season is Amy and her parents trying to figure out the future of the baby. In this episode, they start interviewing potential parents for the baby. Amy is pleased with her dad's co-worker, Donovan, and his partner, Leon. Meanwhile, Adrian and Grace fight over Ricky.
8 That's Enough Of That - 7.6
In this season one episode, Amy finds out that her baby is going to be a boy. Ricky's nasty dad pays him a visit and tries to get him and Amy involved in a money scheme with the baby's adoption. Thankfully, Ricky's dad is out of the picture again when he returns to jail for his illegal drugs.
7 Hedy's Happy Holiday House - 7.6
This episode from the fifth season is extremely random, but it is one of the most enjoyable. It's the only Christmas episode of the entire series, and everyone heads over to Hedy's Happy Holiday House. This is a glorious Christmas toy store that Ricky would sneak into every Christmas as a child. The theory is that the house is meant to be a place for kids like Ricky to escape and have some fun. Jack is in a coma, and Kathy goes into labor.
6 The Secret Wedding Of The American Teenager - 7.6
Ah, the first wedding of the series. In season one, Amy and Ben decide to get married at a little chapel with all their closest friends. This is back in the era where she thinks he will solve all her problems. The whole school winds up getting fake IDs. Turns out that the wedding is a sham, too. This doesn't stop everyone from celebrating. Those kids love a good party.
5 You Don't Know What You've Got - 7.6
This season two episode is about all of Amy's friends skipping school one day. The new guidance counselor, Dr. Bink, is hot on their trail. Amy and her mom are away on a random mother-daughter beach vacation. Ben's summer love, Maria, comes to visit him from Italy. Perhaps this episode makes the list because it entertains viewers with so many different balls in the air.
4 I Feel Sick - 7.7
This is only the third episode of season one, and Amy has not told her parents about the baby yet. Ricky and Adrian are having lots of sex, Ben and Amy are kissing, and Amy confides in Ashley about the baby. Ricky is also tangled up in Grace's life as she tries to use him to hide her sneaky time with Jack.
3 The Big One - 7.8
This season two premiere continues Amy's first days at home with her son, John, after giving birth to him. Now, her mother is pregnant. Ben wants to have sex with Amy, and Grace wants to have sex with Jack. Adrian warns Grace that this could be a bad decision, and Grace's father is certainly against it. As soon as Grace and Jack decide to do it, Grace's father dies in a plane crash. It's a devastating story that will affect Grace for much of the series.
2 Cute - 7.8
It's a wonder that this episode is on the top ten list. George and Anne have let their teenage daughter drive across the country with her friend, Toby. The two attempt to find jobs in Florida. At this point in the fourth season, Ashley is barely a fixture in the series anymore. College is a focal point of the episode; Grace tries to fit in with Daniel's college environment.
Ricky is having trouble getting into college because of a sleazy admissions employee who got mad that Ricky wouldn't have sexual relations with her.
1 And Circumstance - 8.2
This season four episode is jam-packed with drama and important plot details. It certainly makes sense that it has the highest rating of all. The episode is made up of three important parts: character flashbacks, graduation ceremony, and wild party at the lake house. In the flashbacks, Ricky, Jack, and Adrian think back on their time at Grant High School. Each character's flashback is set to a variation of "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne. This is significant because the song is a prominent force in establishing characters in the early days of the series. The wild party also uses music to tell a story of deception. Jesse cheats on Lauren with Madison, and Henry sleeps with Adrian.
