James Gunn Thinks Back To The Future Is The Perfect Movie

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has shared his thoughts on what he thinks are perfect movies, and Back to the Future is definitely one of them. The 1985 Robert Zemeckis film has become a cultural touchstone over the years, with many considering it to be one of the best ever made. Back to the Future follows Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) as he accidentally travels back in time with the help of his friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and finds himself interfering in his parents' courtship. The film spawned two sequels, both of which found success but arguably did not surpass the first in terms of quality. Rumors of a potential reboot spread following deepfake edits of Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. in the roles of Marty and Doc Brown, but even Holland said Back to the Future is already perfect on its own and doesn't necessarily need a reboot.

Gunn has been doing his part to keep people entertained while being stuck in quarantine due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Whether it's participating in a live watch party of Guardians of the Galaxy or sharing his thoughts on which film sequels are better than the originals (Back to the Future II was not on his list), Gunn has been very active on social media. At the same time, he's been editing his DC film The Suicide Squad from home. The Suicide Squad managed to avoid the Warner Bros. release date shuffle that occurred yesterday and is currently still on track for an August 2021 release.

On Tuesday, Twitter users began sharing their picks for the the hashtag "Five Perfect Movies." Gunn got in on the fun soon enough. Before he shared his films, Gunn mused about what exactly makes a perfect movie. When it comes to Back to the Future, Gunn started by saying it "SEEMINGLY could be imperfect (why don't Mom and Dad remember Marty?)." However, he then went on to conclude it is, in fact, perfect in his eyes, along with films like Chinatown and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Check out some of his picks and full Back to the Future rationalization below:

As Gunn suggested, it's hard to say exactly what makes the perfect film. Since people's opinions are subjective, what one person thinks is perfect might be awful in another's eyes. While it's interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on what they enjoy, it's important to remember that it does vary from person to person. That being said, everyone can probably agree that Back to the Future is pretty awesome, regardless of whatever flaws could be perceived.

Because of that, any potential Back to the Future reboot will probably be frowned upon right from the start, and Gunn would likely be one of the first to voice his displeasure. With the amount of reboots Hollywood keeps investing in, there's certainly a chance Zemeckis' classic could see itself get revived at some point. It just might be set up for failure right from the start, because it'll be competing with a pretty perfect movie.
