Grey’s Anatomy: 10 Shocking Storylines Fans Never Expected

Over sixteen seasons and a decade and a half since its debut, Grey’s Anatomy has managed to hold on to a firm fanbase who remain with the show to this day. There have been many marvelous storylines in that time, as well as a few badly received ones.

However, the show has managed to pull off certain plot angles without anyone predicting it, whether it be good or bad. Due to the abundance of stories that play out on the show, some need to be refreshed for the fans, and here are 10 storylines that viewers didn’t see coming until they were played out.

10 Mark's Daughter Causing His Break-Up With Lexie

Mark’s relationship with Lexie was added to show his character development into a more mature person, although fans were convinced he would mess things up somehow. And yet, the arrival of his daughter was the last thing viewers would have thought would be the reason.

Not only did the oddly-named Sloan appear out of nowhere, her immaturity and influence in Mark’s life turned out to be the factor in causing his and Lexie’s breakup. Perhaps equally as odd was how the storyline ended as inexplicably as it started.

9 Alex Leaving Jo For Izzie

Everything about Alex’s exit was odd, and this leaves out Jo to carry out her own storylines in the future. While Alex’s departure was known to fans already, nobody saw it coming that Izzie of all people would be brought back.

On top of that, Alex’s exit story even saw him become a father of two children, thereby adding something to his characterization at the eleventh hour. The fact that the 300th episode had shown Alex claiming he was over Izzie, only for the arc to turn suddenly once more, caused one of the biggest shocks on the show.

8 April Giving Up On Her Faith

Upon first arriving on the series, it appeared as if April’s faith wouldn’t be that big of a deal and that she would overlook it at some point. However, she remained steadfast in that area for so long that it became an essential part of her character.

This is why, when April completely abandoned her beliefs and stopped taking her religion seriously, the subsequent storyline of her crisis was a surprising one. With this tying into her reconciliation with Matthew and eventual departure, though, the angle certainly was valid.

7 Teddy's Repeated Infidelity

Before returning from her original departure, fans thought of Teddy as a person who was relatively unlucky in love but a loyal friend. Now, though, the storyline of her cheating on Owen behind his back has shaken her entire characterization.

Along with that, fans were also made to learn that Teddy had once in the past carried an affair with a former friend’s romantic partner. The revelation that Teddy could be so unlikable and happily carry on affairs multiple times is something no-one could have predicted to play out as an extended arc.

6 Callie's Confusion Causing Erica To Leave

The most obvious assumption from the Season 4 finale was that Callie and Erica would now be a couple and figure out more about their sexuality, but the show took a different approach. Instead, the angle veered into Callie being unsure of her orientation, leading to Erica’s departure from the hospital.

The surprising part about this wasn’t as much about the confusion in sexuality, but rather how the story turned into one where Erica outright exited the show itself, yet the plot still lingered upon Callie's confusion over this for some time.

5 Jo's Identity Revealed As A Fake

There’s not much that goes right with Jo’s life, and after having seen her in a domestic abuse angle, a will they/won’t they arc with Alex, among other things, the revelation that her real name wasn’t even Jo was still “way out there” for fans to stomach instantly.

This storyline also brought with it a spouse for Jo, as this new character stuck around for some time and started to threaten Jo that he would ruin her life. Following this story, very little could surprise fans where Jo’s concerned.

4 Maggie's Connection With Richard And Meredith

A previously unknown family member arriving wasn’t new for Grey’s Anatomy, but expanding upon this was something that hadn’t been seen before. Maggie’s arrival not only opened up a flashback storyline for Richard but for Meredith as well.

This brought in several memory sequences where Meredith was shown remembering how her mother had been pregnant and how she’d repressed these memories. The knowledge that Maggie was Richard’s daughter was surprising, but the resulting episodes dedicated to this information was even more unexpected.

3 Meredith's Breakdown After Derek's Death

With the actor confirming his departure, it was always going to be Derek’s death that would serve as his exit. However, Grey’s Anatomy subverted expectations, carried forward from previous deaths like George’s, to have an expanded arc for Meredith.

Here, the story saw Meredith pack her bags and abandon her life in Seattle to settle in California for a year, even cutting people out of her lives. That’s something you wouldn’t see coming from a person who had only around that time claimed she would never be leaving Seattle. This also paved the way for the storyline of Meredith despising Callie's girlfriend Penny for causing Derek's death.

2 Amelia's Tumor

This was a smartly hidden arc, which unfolded in the form of Amelia gradually exhibiting signs of aggression and hysteria in her personality. When almost everyone thought it was the toll of her marriage taking effect, the show dropped the big news that Amelia actually had a tumor.

Not only did this make sense in the context of everything that happened before it also served to keep fans on the back foot on what to expect in the future as Amelia’s deteriorating marriage took a different turn from there.

1 George And Izzie's Affair

There were only few friendships on TV that could claim to be stronger than that of Izzie and George, so there was no reason for anyone to suspect anything would happen between these two. And yet, this arc played out just when George got married to Callie.

Out of nowhere, Izzie was shown to be in love with George, being willing to physically fight against Callie in order to win him from her. It also brought upon the storyline of George failing his internship and having to start over, another surprise for fans since George had been shown to be a good doctor for three seasons before that.
