Some would argue that Friends is so good and so iconic that it's pretty difficult to even think about changing anything about it. While that may be one way of looking at it, others actually feel as if there are quite a few storylines that needed to be "fleshed out" a little bit more than they actually were. Today, we're going to test that theory by running through a series of storylines that—in the best way possible—left us wanting more.
Friends is still great, but it's important to remember that nothing on television is ever perfect, no matter how much we want it to be.
10 Chandler vs Richard
Chandler clearly thinks he’s been able to devise the world’s greatest engagement plan when he attempts to throw Monica off the scent of his impending proposal. Instead, in a bizarre turn of events, he actually winds up opening the door for Richard to potentially swoop in and steal his girl. While it wasn’t pleasant, this would’ve been all the more intriguing if the show had spread it across quite a few episodes instead of just two.
9 Rachel & Joey
It may be a storyline that a whole lot of people didn’t like, but, let’s face it, Rachel and Joey were two characters that worked really well together. They were both considered to be mentally and comedically aligned, they both had to scratch and claw to succeed in their respective fields, and they actually did have quite a bit of chemistry and history together. Unfortunately, their relationship was over before it had even really begun, and that’s a shame.
8 Eddie
Before we even really got the chance to learn his name or find out more about his back story, the character of Eddie had been and gone in his all too brief stint on Friends.
It was a storyline that wasn’t treated particularly seriously, even though the themes behind it were pretty worrying. The idea of Joey going back to be the one who saved Chandler from this psycho was intriguing, but they didn’t flesh it out enough.
7 Joey To Los Angeles
There may not have been the time available to properly explore this idea, but there is something so fascinating about Joey Tribbiani’s decision to move from New York City to Los Angeles.
He explains it briefly in the very first scene of Joey, but it certainly felt anticlimatic for someone who was so passionate about staying in the Big Apple. He clearly had some kind of moment where he decided it was the best thing for him to do, and, if they’d have entertained that in the last few episodes of Friends, more people would’ve been excited about the spin-off.
6 Ross & Carol Reunion
There’s a very brief moment early in the show’s run where it looks as if Ross and Carol could resume their romantic relationship with one another. When we say brief, though, we mean it’s about 30 seconds long—and even that’s being generous.
Given the rivalry between Ross and Susan, perhaps it would’ve made more sense for him to return back to his ex-wife, Carol, instead of focusing all his attention on Rachel.
5 Chandler & Kathy
Chandler and Kathy both put their respective relationships with Joey on the line because they felt as if they had to give in to their feelings for one another. After Joey forgave the pair of them, it was only a matter of episodes until Kathy cheated on Chandler after their first big fight.
Maybe this made sense in the context of the story, but these two actually worked really well together and had some great chemistry.
4 The Lottery
The whole lottery episode is one of the very best in the final few seasons of Friends, and it left us all wanting more. They could’ve easily turned that into an annual episode, but, in order to do that, they may have needed to start it up a few years prior.
Either way, there was a whole lot of potential, with each episode potentially exploring a different "issue" that prevents the gang from winning the big bucks.
3 Mike Gets Phoebe Back
Mike decides to fly to Barbados and declare his love for Phoebe, but, before those two episodes even happened, fans had only just started to come to terms with the idea of Phoebe being with David.
The feud between Mike and David was really entertaining, and the character of David deserved the chance to fight for Phoebe more so than he did. Phoebe always did deserve a few more important storylines than she was given.
2 Chandler’s Love Of New York
This is a pretty silly entry when you really think about it, but, when Chandler came into his apartment looking like the Statue of Liberty had thrown up on him, fans loved it. Sure, it was a bit too slapstick for some, but, if they’d had him crack out some jokes and facts about just how amazing New York City is for the next few episodes, it would’ve been worth it. Instead, the whole idea is quickly forgotten about within just a few minutes.
1 Rachel’s Smoking
Smoking is the kind of habit that everyone wants to cut out, but Rachel clearly didn’t even want to start in the first place.
If the writers had backed the idea that she started to legitimately get addicted to the substance, perhaps they could’ve used it as a way to develop her friendship with Chandler. Instead of him jokingly encouraging her to smoke, he may have been the one to save her from going down a dark path.
