Rian Johnson may be attending the 92nd Academy Awards as a nominee for Knives Out, but it looks like he’ll be taking a bit of Star Wars: The Last Jedi with him for good luck. Just a few hours before the red carpet, Johnson posted a picture wearing a porg-shaped cufflink, an homage to the puffin-like creatures in the Star Wars film he wrote and directed.
Knives Out is nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 2020 Oscars, and both critics and audiences have praised the comic murder mystery. However, Johnson’s films haven’t always been so well-received. Back in 2017, Star Wars: The Last Jedi left fans divided, and even the porgs couldn’t escape the debate. The film created the wide-eyed, non-threatening creatures for practical reasons during filming. And while some fans couldn’t get enough of the porgs, others -- including star John Boyega -- were uncomfortable with them. They certainly didn’t receive the universal love that the Child (aka Baby Yoda) has.
Now, on the biggest night in Hollywood, Johnson is wearing the symbol of his controversial Star Wars film. The writer/director tweeted a close-up picture of the porg cufflink with a caption reading, “Ehhhhhhhh yeah f**k it.” This isn’t the first time Johnson has sported accessories supporting his films; at the BAFTAs this year, he wore knife-shaped cufflinks. Yet when he shared the picture of the porg cufflink on Oscar night, thousands of fans responded to the Twitter post with likes and comments in support of the filmmaker.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi earned four Academy Award nominations in technical categories, but the nomination for Johnson’s Knives Out screenplay is his first personal nomination. As it stands, audiences may even be lifting the backlash against The Last Jedi since the Star Wars trilogy ended. Whether or not his Star Wars film will reach the acclaim of Knives Out, Johnson says he stands by his choices in The Last Jedi.
Even if the porg fails to be a lucky charm during the Oscars tonight, fans will have plenty to see from Johnson with his next few projects. Lionsgate confirmed they will begin production on a Knives Out sequel, and we’re eager to see more of the colorful characters and clever plot that made the original film so successful. While fans are still waiting on confirmation about a potential new Star Wars trilogy from Johnson, there may be more sneaky fashion choices from a galaxy far, far away to come.
