Neo: The World Ends With You's Summer Release Date Revealed

After being announced in November, NEO: The World Ends With You has an official launch date this summer. Published by Square Enix, NEO: TWEWY is the sequel to the Nintendo DS cult classic The World Ends With You. The release date trailer comes on the same day as the long-awaited anime adaptation's release.

The original The World Ends With You is an urban fantasy RPG action title released in 2007. It follows Neku Sakuraba, a young man who wakes up in Shibuya and is forced to play the Reaper's Game. Players must offer their most beloved possession in order to participate and the winners get the option of either ascending to a higher plane of existence or returning to life. Over the course of the game, Neku uncovers the secrets of his predicament, the Reaper's Game, and the people he meets in Shibuya.

The sequel is set to launch on July 27th for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, with a PC release via the Epic Games story coming later this summer, according to a new trailer posted by Square Enix. NEO: The World Ends With You's new protagonist is Rindo, who is another participant of the Reaper's Game. While the setting of Shibuya and some of the Reapers from the first game return, the main playable cast is (almost) entirely new. Rindo is part of the Wicked Twisters, a team also consisting of Fret, Nagi, and Minamimoto, who returns from the original.

Much of the team from the original TWEWY has returned. The iconic art style of Tetsuya Nomura remains, alongside Takeharu Ishimoto as the lead composer. As for the voice cast, the English voice for Minamimoto, Andy Hirsch, is confirmed to reprise his role. Other voice talents for NEO include Griffin Burns, Paul Castro Jr., Miranda Parkin, and Xander Mobus. Neku, the protagonist from the previous title, is shown to return in the trailer, but there is no word if his voice actor will return.

The new trailer also shows off NEO: TWEWY's refined combat system. The original for DS utilized both the top and bottom screens for battle, with Neku and his partner moving in sync. NEO instead opts for a more hack-and-slash style of combat, better suited for the single screens of the Switch and PS4. The mechanic of "psych pins," which uses pins and Shibuya fashion to augment the stats of the characters, has returned as well.

NEO: The World Ends With You is building on the already solid foundation of the original and seems to keep the same spirit and energy of its predecessor. While the 2018 enhanced port for Switch, The World Ends With You: Final Remix certainly revitalized interest in the concept, a full sequel cements the Reaper's Game as one of Square Enix's mainstays alongside Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.
