Google Pixel 5 (& Pixel 4a 5G) Launch Date Might Be October 8

As the world awaits the release of the Pixel 4a on August 20, it seems that the official launch date for the next phones from Google might only be two months away. The next phones that Google is expected to release are the Pixel 5, the next device in the premium Pixel line, as well as a 5G version of the more affordable Pixel 4a.

After teasing about the release of the Pixel 4a last week, Google made it official with an announcement this week. During the launch of the Pixel 4a, Google also confirmed that the Pixel 5 would be released in the fall, and provided information on the countries where it would be available. However, the company did not provide the specific date of the launch.

9to5Google reports that the Pixel 4a announcement from Google France mentions that the Pixel 5 and the Pixel 4a will be available for pre-order on October 8. The launch date mentioned in the French announcement, which was different than its English version, has since been removed. When 9to5Google asked for clarification on the date, Google did not offer any new comment. While the date is just speculation at the moment, it does match up with a Tweet from DisplaySearch and DSCC analyst, Ross Young that suggested the launch date in around sixty days away.

While the official launch date for the Pixel 5 has not been confirmed by Google, the October 8 date does fit the pattern of previous Pixel releases. In past years, Google has typically announced its latest hardware in October to build buzz in anticipation for the holiday shopping season. The Apple iPhone 12 is also expected to be released in either September or October, although no official date for that phone has been confirmed by the company either. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 is another phone the Pixel 5 will be directly competing with during the next few months, and that one is due to go on sale from August 21.

Whether the October 8 leak was by design or by mistake, it could have an impact on Pixel device sales. If by design, then it could have been used to drum up hype for the Pixel 5. Last year, sales for the Pixel 4 lagged and Google doesn’t want to repeat the same mistakes again. However, if the leak was by mistake, then it could have a negative impact on the current sales of the new Pixel 4a. After all, why would some consumers buy the Pixel 4a now when they could wait until October and get either the 5G version or the new Pixel 5? Either way, Google is probably concerned about the impact that the pandemic might have on its holiday phone sales, so it's probably a good idea to get the word out now, and as much as possible.
