Dwyane Wade Will Host American Adaptation Of The Cube For WarnerMedia

Former NBA superstar Dwyane Wade will host and executive produce The Cube for WarnerMedia. The popular UK game show originally ran on ITV from 2009 to 2015 with presenter Philip Schofield. The show was previously piloted in the US for CBS back in 2010 with Neil Patrick Harris as host. The news comes shortly after the announcement of a revival of the show in the UK.

The show gives pairs of contestants nine lives to complete simple games inside a 4m × 4m × 4m Perspex cube which makes them much harder when played. Each game they complete gets them a designated dollar amount. They are given two helps, a trail run and a simplifier, each of which may be used one time in the game. Master seven games without running out of lives and the contestants win the top dollar amount. Previously in the UK, it was £250,000, which will now be upped to £1,000,000 for the UK revival. No amount has been announced for the US version.

According to Deadline, the news of Wade’s involvement. It also mentions that the American version “will include new twists and turns and also give Wade the opportunity to show his own skills” which will in one way manifest as a new help, “helping-hand” which will allow Wade to enter The Cube and “lend his athletic prowess and compete on behalf of the contestant.”

The idea of Wade as host brings a new perspective to the game, one of an athlete’s, which does make sense given that British Olympic Gold-Medalist runner Mo Farah was only one of three people to beat The Cube during its original UK run. With lending his expertise Wade’s role could be one of a supportive and informative coach, as opposed to Schofield’s more dramatic and serious approach as host.

The news of an American Cube was first reported by BuzzerBlog when a casting announcement went out last month. When the show was first piloted, it was around the same time as NBC’s Minute to Win It which had a similar premise of simple games under pressure. One theory notes that The Cube premiering around the same time might have put it in the position of being written off as a rip-off of Minute to Win It.

It is not currently known which of WarnerMedia’s many properties the show will end up on. The 10-episode order could pop up anywhere from TBS, TNT, or TruTV. Even HBO Max or The CW may be a possible home. That decision will be made closer to its premiere in 2021. Wherever it goes, The Cube just might become America’s new favorite game show.
