Amazon Prime Video Launches New Feature Letting Up to 100 People Watch Together

Following other streaming platforms, Amazon Prime has added a new Watch Party feature, letting up to 100 people watch a movie or TV series together. With the coronavirus forcing people to spend most of their time indoors and separated, many people have had to adapt to the new circumstances. From schooling to reality TV, almost everything has shifted online, including hanging out and watching TV with friends.

Per Variety, Amazon Prime has begun to slowly roll out a new feature called Watch Party, which would allow up to 100 people to gather together in a virtual room to watch media. The feature is browser-based and works on all major browsers except for Apple's Safari. There is synchronized playback under the host's control and a chat feature on the right of the screen. As of right now, the program is only supported on desktop computers.

Each host or participant must be an Amazon Prime subscriber based on the U.S., though the feature is available at no extra cost. Hopefully, it will soon expand to international subscribers. Subscribers can access any VOD titles included in Amazon Prime Video for Watch Party, like Upload, Fleabagor The Boys, but purchased content currently cannot be streamed with this new feature.

Amazon began testing out the feature in April through its game streaming platform Twitch. Hulu followed closely behind, testing their Watch Party feature in May that allows group streaming and chat with up to eight people. There is also a plug-in called Netflix Party with the same idea, though it's unaffiliated with the official streaming platform. With the ability to watch and chat with up to 100 people, Amazon Prime's new Watch Party feature is a step ahead, and worth checking out.
